Alexandra Adoch has earned a remarkable achievement, winning the silver medal in the U15

Alexandra Adoch has earned a remarkable achievement, winning the silver medal in the U15 female foil at the Challenge Wratislavia 2023, held in Wroclaw. Her outstanding performance in a field of 154 athletes, three of whom were Romanian, is a testament to her dedication and hard work. Alexandra’s success is even more impressive given the stiff competition she faced from talented fencers from all over the world.

Additionally, three Romanian athletes participated in the U15 men’s individual épée category. All three passed the group stage and progressed to the knockout stage. Horia Andrei Mladin of ACS Kids Tâmpa 2015 Brașov won his first-round match against Olksa Artsyshevskyy from Ukraine, with a score of 15-12, but was defeated in the second round by Britain’s Oghenegaren Esiovwa-Thompson, who won 15-9. Adrian Emanuel Iurniuc, also from ACS Kids Tâmpa 2015 Brașov, followed the same path. He won his first-round match against Germany’s Finn Hartwig (15-14) but lost to Jakub Kliment of the Czech Republic (10-15) in the second round. Stefan Popa of CS UNEFS Bucharest passed the first two rounds (15-9 against Poland’s Leon Kaszkur and 15-10 against Poland’s Franciszek Golach) but was eliminated in the third round by Germany’s Deni Levi, who won 15-12. Stefan Popa finished 30th in the final standings, Adrian Emanuel Iurniuc finished 39th, and Horia Andrei Mladin finished 44th.

In the U13 men’s individual épée category, Romania was represented by Mihai Popa of ASCS Engarde Bucharest. He passed the group stage and progressed to the knockout stage, where he defeated Poland’s Xawery Trawinski 12-4 in the second round. In the next round, Mihai Popa lost 4-12 to another Polish fencer, Marek Homecki. Mihai finished 20th in the final standings.

In the U11 men’s individual épée category, two Romanian fencers participated in the competition. Both advanced to the knockout stage, where Vlad Taropa of ACS Kids Tâmpa 2015 Brașov was eliminated in the second round. He won his first-round match against China’s Kwan Lam Lester Zheng, with a score of 8-6, but lost to Britain’s Damian Tovar 7-8. Andrei Stoica of ACS Kids Tâmpa 2015 Brașov had a longer path. He qualified directly for the second round, where he defeated Japan’s Maxim Varkey 8-4. In the third round, he defeated Poland’s Bartosz Skiba 8-2. Andrei was eliminated in the quarterfinals, losing narrowly 8-7 to Ukraine’s Mykhaylo Havadzyn. Andrei Stoica finished 10th in the final standings, and Vlad Taropa finished 51st.

Finally, in the U15 men’s individual foil category, six of the 11 Romanian fencers competing were eliminated after the group stage. Mircea Mărgăritescu (CS Chimia Rm Vâlcea), David Grigorovici (ACS Atlas Invictus Cluj), Radu Andronic (CSM Corona Brașov), Adrian Emanuel Iurniuc (ACS Kids Tâmpa 2015 Brașov), Sebastian Ball (ACS Atlas Invictus Cluj), and Horia Andrei Mladin (ACS Kids Tâmpa 2015 Brașov) were the Romanian fencers who did not advance to the elimination rounds.

The remaining five Romanian fencers did manage to make it to the elimination rounds, but only one, Bogdan Istrate (CSA Steaua Bucharest), was able to make it past the round of 64. Istrate was ultimately eliminated in the round of 32.

It was a disappointing result for the Romanian men’s foil team, as they were unable to repeat their success from previous competitions. However, the athletes should be commended for their hard work and dedication, and they will undoubtedly be back to compete at the highest level in the future.
